This month (Feb) our guests are from Newcastle (UK) Dr. Keith Armstrong and Robert Lonsdale.

Keith Armstrong was born in Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne, where he has worked as a community development worker, poet, librarian and publisher he is coordinator of the Northern Voices creative writing and community publishing project which specialises in recording the experiences of people in the North East of England. He was awarded a doctorate in 2007 for his work on Newcastle writer Jack Common at the University of Durham where he received a BA Honours Degree in Sociology in 1995 and Masters Degree in 1998 for his studies on regional culture in the North East of England.Though a regionalist inspired by the landscape of his birth and its folk and musical traditions, he is very much a European and his work is much influenced by writers such as Hoelderlin, Hesse, Brecht, Baudelaire, Prevert, Esenin, and Mayakovsky.

Robert Lonsdale is a poet, publisher and broadcaster. He has written, produced and directed two short films called, “ For Those Who Sit And Wait “ and “Ya Joking Aren't Ya ? “, both of which have been featured in many short film festivalsncluding Teesside University’s “Concept“ film night. His latest work is an hour long television drama called “The Let “ which I have just submitted to the B.B.C.

This month our guests are The Clare Three Legged Stool Poets featuring Arthur Watson, Peter Kay, Patrick Stack, and Brian Mooney.

Clare Three-Legged Stool Poets was founded in 2003 to celebrate the poetic work of men and women from North, South, and East - the three "halves" of Clare. There are at present some 16 members in the group which, to date, has produced two anthologies, a broadsheet, and Hidden Burren, a photographic essay on North Clare by Ilsa Thielen accompanied by verse.

This month our guests are Stephen James Smith and Enda Reilly PLUS continuing on our '10 Minute Play' series. and open-mic.

Stephen James Smith is a remarkable performance poet and a bit of a legend in Dublin. Not only is he a former Cúirt International Literary Festival Grand Slam Poetry Champion, he is also the MC and organiser of the excellent weekly Glór Sessions in The International Bar. In 2009 he proudly represented Ireland at the Vilenica Literary Festival Slovenia and in 2010 at Wiersze w Metrze Poland. He is currently recording an EP of old Irish poems with musician Enda Reilly. Dublin singer-songwriter Enda Reilly writes in both English and Irish, and his Irish songs can be heard regularly on RTÉ Radio na Gaeltachta. 2010 saw Enda facilitating workshops with The Monaghan Song and Poetry Writers Group, culminating in production of their album “Hands Together”.
Enda also reaches out to younger generations through his Climate Change Songs Workshops initiative, introducing the art of song writing and environmental issues into schools and other groups. Enda performs “Spoken Word Sung Verse” with hard-working Glór poet Stephen James Smith, which is a unique mix of song and poetry performance featuring the poetry of the likes of Yeats and Kavanagh, as well as original works. He also plays regularly with the fun-loving collective known as The Lazy Band. C.P. Stewart lives with his family in North Yorkshire. Formerly singer/songwriter with the cult band Laughing Gravy , his poetry has been widely published in Canada, Australia, Ireland, England and the United States. For two years he was the Poetry Editor of Sotto Voce Arts and Literary magazine (U.S.). A chapbook of his poetry, Taking it In was published by Koo Poetry Press in 2009.

Fred Johnston was born in 1951 and has lived in Spain, Africa and Canada. He has published poetry, criticism, novels and short fiction, and has been involved in organising various literary events for many years. A new collection of stories is due from Parthian (Wales) in Spring 2011; Orangeman, a collection of stories in French, appeared from Terre de Brume (France) in October 2010.

This month we launch issue 20 of Revival Literary Journal plus our guests are George Harding, Adam Wyeth and Gary King.

Gary King was born in Galway in 1963, where he still lives. His poems have appeared in magazines such as Poetry Nottingham, The Burning Bush, Poetry Monthly, Revival, Crannóg, West 47 and The Journal. A chapbook of his poems, Ambiguous Lights, was published by Over The Edge in 2004. He has been a featured reader at the O'Bhéal, White House and Over The Edge: Open Reading series. He was runner up in the 2007 Poetry Grand Slam at the Cúirt International Festival of Literature. In December he won the 2008 North Beach Poetry Grand Slam and his first collection of poems Pluto's Noon Sky was published by Doire Press in 2009.

Adam Wyeth, born 1978, lives in West Cork. He was a recent prize-winner of the Fish International Poetry Competition, 2009 and a runner-up in the Arvon International Poetry Competition, 2006. His poems have been anthologized in The Fish Anthology, Something Beginning with P , the Arvon 25th Anniversary anthology and Landing Places. His work has appeared in numerous literary journals, including Poetry London, Magma, The Stinging Fly and The Shop. He was a featured poet in Agenda and selected for the Poetry Ireland Introductions Series, 2007. He teaches Creative Writing and is on the Poetry Ireland Writers in Schools scheme. Wyeth also writes a regular column for the Southern Star. His first collection, Silent Music, was recently published from Salmon.

George Harding is a Corkonian who divides his time between Cork and Kinsale and was formerly in involved in the bicycle business in Dublin and Cork. His poems have been featured in various publications here, Britain and America. He is an environmentalist, bibliophile, and hurling fanatic. He is married to Nuala and has 3 children. His first collection 'My Stolen City' waspublished by Revival Press in May.

This month our guests are Tim Cunningham and Richard Halperin.

Tim Cunningham was born in Limerick in 1942 and educated at Limerick C.B.S. and Birkbeck College, London. He has lived in Limerick, Tipperary, Dublin, Trowbridge, London, Newark (Delaware) and, presently, Billericay. He has published and read widely. His first collection, 'Don Marcelino's Daughter' was published by Peterloo Poets in 2001 and reprinted in 2002 and 2004. His second collection 'Unequal Thirds' was published in 2006, again by Peterloo. His third collection, Kyrie, was published by Revival Press in 2008.

Richard W. Halperin’s first poetry collection Anniversary was published in 2010 and his second Shy White Tiger will appear in 2012 – both via Salmon Poetry Limited. In 2005 for UNESCO, he edited the free downloadable teacher education book Reading and Writing Poetry, in which fifty poets worldwide give their views on the subject.

This month our guests are Gabriel FitzMaurice and Dave Rock.

Gabriel Fitzmaurice, whose roots lie deep in the strong literary tradition of North Kerry is poet, teacher, broadcaster, writer, translator, singer and raconteur. He was born in 1952, in the village of Moyvane, Co Kerry where he still lives. For more than three decades he taught and later served as principal at his local national school but is now happily retired. He is the author of more than forty books, including collections of poetry in English and Irish as well as several collections of verse for children. He has translated extensively from Irish and had also edited a number of anthologies of poetry in both English and Irish. In addition, he has published volumes of essays and collections of songs and ballads. He is a familiar voice on Kerry Radio where he hosts his own show. Gabriel has also been frequently heard on national television and radio speaking on education and the arts. A cassette of his poems, The Space Between: New and Selected Poems 1984-1992 is available.
He is a former chair and literary advisor of Listowel Writers' Week and is currently a committee member of Eigse Michael Hartnett. He is an award winner of the Gerard Manley Hopkins Centenary Poetry Competition and has twice represented Ireland at the European Festival of Poetry in Louvain, Belgium.
He has been called "poetry's answer to John B Keane" (Books Ireland) and his poems have been described as "comparable to Burns for their insight and lyricism" (The Irish Times ).

Dave Rock has been a featured performer at practically every main venue for poetry in Ireland. He was placed third in the Cuirt Literature Festival Grand slam and fourth in the All Ireland. His performing style is highly physical and expressive, and often very joyous. He combines slam pieces with traditional poetry. He has also been a storyteller for a number of years, working with traditional and his own invented folktales. He is the co-creator of the InkStorm workshops in creative writing and performing, which have had a ream of very successful events across Ireland and England. He has taught and facilitated both writing, storytelling and performing with children, teens and adults. He's currently designing a new breed of workshops. He's been published in a number of journals, and will be published in the rest! His chapbook, A Single Unstruck Match, was published in 2008. He's also an art photographer, with a number of successful exhibitions.

This Month (May) Launch of Revival Literary Journal No 19 PLUS Guest readers Patrica Byrne and Mae Leonard.

Patricia Byrne lives in Limerick and writes poetry, fiction and nonfiction. Her poetry collection Unstable Time was published in 2009. Her nonfiction book The Friar & the Felon will be published by Collins Press in spring 2012. The book tells the story of the Achill Island atrocity of 1894 involving the infamous James Lynchehaun, who was one of the influences on John Millington Synge in writing The Playboy of the Western World. Mae Leonard is originally from Limerick now living in Co. Kildare: Writer, Writer in Schools/Libraries, Poet and Broadcaster. Winner of several short story and poetry literary awards including Scottish International, Francis MacManus, Belmont Prize etc. Publication: My Home is There, Tarzan Clancy, Six for Gold. Her new Poetry collection "I Shouldn't be Telling you This" will be launched on the night by Frank Prendergast. A collection of her Sunday Miscellany contributions is due out from Revival Press later on in the year.

This Month (April) our Guest Readers are Susan Miller DuMars and Michael Farry.

Susan Miller Dumars teaches creative writing at various Galway venues. She also organises literary events, including the Over the Edge open readings, begun in 2003. She also teaches special needs groups as well as the general public. She published her first full book of short stories in December of last year. The book Lights In The Distance from Doire Press has thirteen stories, most of which have been published individually.

Michael Farry was born in Coolaney, Co. Sligo in 1947. He attended Rockfield National School and St Nathy's College, Ballaghaderreen. He trained as a primary teacher in St Patrick's Training College, Drumcondra, Dublin 1966-68. He has been writing poetry since 2004 and has been published in a number of small magazines and has been commended and shortlisted in a number of poetry competitions. He is a founder member of Boyne Writers Group.

This Month (March) our Guest Readers are Keith Armstrong(UK), Gary Miller (UK) and Simone Mansell Broom (Wales).

KEITH ARMSTRONG was born in Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne, where he hasworked as a community development worker, poet,librarian and publisher.
GARY MILLER, internationally acclaimed songwriter, performer and recording artist, first rose to international prominence during the mid eighties and throughout the nineties as principal songwriter, lead singer, guitarist & mandolin player with The Whisky Priests, the internationally renowned folk-rock band with a worldwide cult following that he founded in 1985 and fronted with his twin brother Glenn (“the Jimi Hendrix of the accordion”) – “the Joe Strummer and Mick Jones of the Folk World”.
SIMONE MANSELL BROOME spent her early childhood in Tenby. She returned to Wales at the end of 2006 and now lives on a Carmarthenshire farm, co-running a small centre for groups, workshops and courses - Ceridwen. Since 2006, Simone’s been successful in numerous poetry competitions, published in anthologies and magazines, broadcast on BBC Radio 4, Radio Wales and elsewhere, performed all over Wales and beyond, won poetry slams and represented Wales in BBC Radio 4’s performance poetry competition.

This Month (February) our Guest Readers are author PJ Taylor and poet Ciaran O’Driscoll. PLUS Launch of Revival Literary Journal 18.

PJ Taylor, a self employed carpenter in Limerick City, has told stories to his children, friends and customers of his childhood growing up in Limerick for over three decades. After years of burning the midnight oil PJ finally completed ‘Between The Three Bridges’. After this initial success, P. J. now takes you through the next seven years. The result ‘Who’s Sorry Now?’ PJ will reads from his new memoir, so be prepared to shed a tear or two and have another good laugh

Ciaran O’Driscoll was born in Co. Kilkenny and lives in Limerick. He has published eight books of poetry including Moving On, Still There: New and Selected Poems (Dedalus Press, 2001) and more recently Surreal Man, a chapbook of 21 poems (Pighog, 2006), and Vecchie Donne di Magione, a dual-language edition of poems in an Italian setting (Volumnia Editrice, 2006). In 2001, Liverpool University Press published his childhood memoir, A Runner Among Falling Leaves. He has won a number of awards for his work, among them the Patrick and Katherine Kavanagh Fellowship in Poetry. In 2007, he was elected to Aosdána.

Organised by The Limerick Writers' Centre this popular monthly reading and open-mic continues to attract audiences with a mix of poetry, prose and music.

This Month (Jan 2011) our guests are poet Teri Murray and author James Lawless.

James Lawless was born in Dublin and divides his time between County Kildare and West Cork. His first novel, Peeling Oranges, a paternal quest set in the Liberties of Dublin and Franco’s Spain, was published in 2007 by Killynon House. Awards include the Scintilla Welsh Open Poetry competition in 2002, the Cecil Day Lewis Play Award 2005 for What Are Neighbours For? and a Hennessy Award nomination and the WOW Award for short stories in 2010. A second novel, For Love of Anna, a story of love, ideology and corruption, was published by New Generation in 2009 as was his book on modern poetry, Clearing The Tangled Wood: Poetry as a way of seeing the world, which was published by Academica Press, USA ( ‘a linguistic ballet, learned and lively on behalf of poetry’ - John Montague), and for which he received an arts bursary award. A new suburban novel, The Avenue (‘A work of passion and truth’ - Declan Kiberd)

Teri Murray began writing in the 1980s and was the winner of the Wicklow Drama Award in 1987 for a children’s play. In 1991 she was commissioned by artist Brian Maguire to write a series of poems to accompany his paintings, Behind Bars – Public and Private.
Her work also featured in Round Peg, an anthology by Clothesline Press, Dublin in 1991. She was editor for Scratches On The Wall, an anthology of Limerick writers produced by Tholsel press in 1995. Since then her poems and short stories have appeared in various magazines.
A Time Under Heaven, her play about the history of Limerick was performed by The Quarry Players and ran for a week at the Belltable in 1996.
Her first collection, Coddle and Tripe, with the late Liam Mulligan was published by Stonebridge in 1998. Poems From The Exclusion Zone appeared in 2001 also from Stonebridge. Later that year she was the winner of a poetry competition which took place during the Eighse Michael Hartnett in Newcastlewest, Co Limerick.
A childrens book, Eddy The Teddy and The Big Fat Nana was published in 2003 followed in 2007 by her third collections of poems, The Authority Of Winter published by Stonebridge.
She is currently editor of Revival Poetry Journal. Where The Daghdha Dances: New and Selected Poems her newest collection from Revival press confirms her as one of the most accomplished poets writing today.

The Winning Short Story in the LWC Flash Fiction Slam 2010 written by Barry Finegan

Two of the five

It all started with the flambéed Christmas pudding. Appearing innocent enough, it did possess two of the five ingredients most common to domestic disaster, fire and alcohol. Things could have turned out quite different.

It was one of those typical white hot, furnace bright, clear sky, sluggish wind, African Christmas days. On such days every manner of creature finds the deepest shade it can and rests; all but homo sapiens. For us it was a day for friends and family; lots of friends, necessary family. A day for trestle tables on the back lawn struggling under the weight of turkeys, hams, steamed vegetables, Christmas puddings, buckets of ice bearing bottles of stein, and sweating cans of lager; many cans of lager. It was a day for streamers, and crackers, and silly little whistles, and short jokes printed in microscopic font onto tiny bits of paper, and crêpe hats that bleed blue, red, yellow and green onto dripping foreheads. Uncle Albert had his own hat; a bright red and crisp white Santa hat, 100% acrylic, made in China.

If Uncle Albert had not got distracted when Ted’s new girlfriend slopped half a glass of wine into her cleavage he would have noticed the pudding being prepared and lit. If it wasn’t so bright he maybe would have seen the almost invisible flames as he reached across the table for the last morsel of stuffing. If he wasn’t eight lagers into Christmas day he would have remembered the warning on the hat to keep away from flame. Had the unfortunate event not occurred I wouldn’t know now just how many people visit the casualty department on Christmas day, nor would I know what to get him for Christmas this year, but I do; a wig.

Barry Finegan was born of Irish descent and raised in Africa, he moved to Ireland late 2008. He is currently working on his first novel and also writes poetry as a form of ‘mind gym’ to hone his creative writing skills.

Limerick Writers’ Centre Christmas Literary Bash
(incorporating the 2010 LWC Flash Fiction Slam Final)

Come along to the Loft @ the Locke bar, George’s quay on Thursday, December 2nd at 8pm for a festive feast of fiction, poetry and a merry miscellany of all sorts of literary guff.

On the night we will be hosting the awards for the 2010 LWC Flash Fiction Slam, with the field narrowed down to just 10 stories. Audience members will get the opportunity to vote for their favourite. The theme was Christmas and the shortlist ranges from the saccharine to the bizarre. The ten short-listed writers will read their pieces, short and attention-grabbing at just 300 words.

A crack team of craic judges has been assembled, including Bob Burke (Bisto award winner – The Third Pig Detective Agency), Roisin Meaney (Love in the Making), Susanne O’Leary(Swedish for Beginners) and Helena Close(The Clever One)

This is the first year that the competition has been run and the organisers report that the standard of entries was very, very high.

Following the award of the Judges prize (sponsored by O’Mahoney’s Booksellers) there will be an open mic where anyone and everyone can bring poetry and prose to the party. Bring along something you’ve written or a piece that moves you and share it with us.

All Ireland ‘limericks’ Slam Championship

Calling all poets and writers! The All Ireland ‘limericks’ Championship takes place Tues 9th Nov in The Loft Venue at The Locke Bar, George’s Quay Limerick…start time 8.00pm!

The slam will take the form of a two round contest (so bring at least two ‘limericks’) and the verse must strictly follow the ‘limerick’ formula, it must also be of the performers own construction.
The winners will be chosen by an appointed three person panel. The prize on offer is a trophy for the winner and two runner up prizes.

If you want to participate, all you have to do is arrive on the night to the Locke Bar and give your name to the M.C. Alternatively you can send on your name to the
limerickwriterscentre@gmail.com requesting inclusion.

What is a Limerick?
To be a Limerick, a verse MUST have: Five lines. Lines one, two, and five MUST rhyme.
Lines three and four MUST rhyme. A good Limerick will have a clever, unanticipated punch line as line five. A good Limerick will not be insipid or pointless. A good Limerick often has puns, word play, eccentric spelling, or some other witty feature.

Performance poets and spoken word artists from Limerick, Cork, Kerry, Clare and Tipperary will battle it out at the Munster heat of the All Ireland Poetry Slam to be held at 8.30pm

Tues Oct 19th- The Locke Bar, Limerick.

For those of you who haven’t experienced one, a slam is a performance poetry competition in which poets perform for not more than three minutes. The winner will be chosen by an appointed three person panel. The prize on offer to the winner is the honour of representing Munster in the 4th All Ireland Poetry Slam to be held 3.00pm Oct 30th at the International Bar in Dublin.

This Month (November) our Guest Readers are Grace Wells and Susanne O’Leary

Grace Wells' first book, 'Gyrfalcon', a novel for children, won the Eilis Dillon Best Newcomer Bisto Award and was an International White Ravens' Choice. A second children's novel Ice-Dreams was published by the O'Brien Press in 2008, while 'One World, Our World' a development education book for Irish Aid, has recently been launched by the Department of Foreign Affairs. Her poetry and short stories have appeared widely and been broadcast on RTE. She was selected for Poetry Ireland's Introductions Series 2003, was shortlisted for the Start Chapbook Prize '06 and the Charlie Byrne New Writer of the Year '07, and took third place in the '07 Patrick Kavanagh Award. Her first collection of poems, When God has been Called Away to Greater Things was recently published. She reviews Irish Poetry for 'Contrary', the University of Chicago's online magazine.

Susanne O’Leary is Swedish, married to a former Irish diplomat., and lives in Co. Tipperary. She has written two non fiction books, published by Gill&Macmillan in 1999 and 2000, respectively and four novels. She has also recently completed a historical novel, based on an old scandal in her family. After that, she co- wrote a detective story with another Swedish writer, who also wrote some of the scripts for the famous ‘Wallander’ series. Her agent has great hopes for this and it’s now out with a number of publishers. She will read from her new novel Swedish for Beginners.

This Month (October) we Launch Revival Poetry Journal No 17 plus Guest Readers Matthew Sweeney and Roisin Meaney ( new novel Love In The Making will be launched by Mags Haugh of Spotlight Stage School on the night).

Matthew Sweeney was born Co Donegal, Ireland, 1952. Lived for many years in London, and more recently in Romania and Germany but returned to UK and Ireland frequently for work and earnings purposes. Since late 2007 he has been based in Cork. As well as publications mentioned elsewhere, work is increasingly appearing in translation. Has lived as a freelance writer since the mid 1980s.

Roisin Meaney was born in Listowel, Co Kerry. She started her working life as an elementary school teacher in 1980. Her first novel, The Daisy Picker, which won the ‘Write a Bestseller’ competition that Tivoli publishers were running to launch themselves. Seven years and five novels later, she gave up teaching to concentrate on fulltime writing.

To date she’s written six adult novels and two children’s books. Three of her novels have made the top five in the Irish bestseller list, one going all the way to the top, and her writing has been translated into German, Spanish, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian. Her latest adult novel, Love in the Making, will be published in the US in early 2011 under the title Semi-Sweet. Her seventh novel, The Things We Do for Love, will hit Irish bookshelves next February, published by Hachette Books Ireland.

She currently lives in Limerick with two badly behaved cats, and she reads stories to small children every Saturday morning in Limerick City library at The Granary.

This Months (September) Guest Readers are Nuala Ní Chonchúir (in association with Poetry Ireland) and Gerard Stembridge.

Nuala Ní Chonchúir was Born in Dublin in 1970, and is a full-time fiction writer and poet, living in Galway county. She has published three collections of short fiction, three poetry collections - one in an anthology, and one novel. Nuala holds a BA in Irish from Trinity College Dublin and a Masters in Translation Studies (Irish/English) from Dublin City University. She has worked as an arts administrator in theatre and in a writers' centre; as a translator, as a bookseller and also in a university library. Nuala teaches creative writing on a part-time basis.

Gerard Stembridge is a writer, director and actor born in 1958 in Limerick. While attending UCD he was auditor of the Literary and Historical Society.
He co-created the Irish radio comedy programme Scrap Saturday (satirical comedy series) with Dermot Morgan. Films as Writer/Director - Guiltrip (1996); About Adam (2000); Alarm(2008). As Writer only - Ordinary Decent Criminal (1999); Nora(2000). TV films: The Truth about Claire(1990); Black Day at Black Rock (2001); Les Européens (2005) ARTE. Novels: According to Luke (2006); Counting Down (2009).

This Months (August) Guest Readers are Dave Lordan and Elaine Feeney

Dave Lordan was born in Derby, England, in 1975, and grew up in Clonakilty in West Cork. In 2004 he was awarded an Arts Council bursary and in 2005 he won the Patrick Kavanagh Award for Poetry. His collections are The Boy in The Ring (Salmon Poetry, 2007), which won the Strong Award for best first collection by an Irish writer and was shortlisted for the Irish Times poetry prize; and Invitation to a Sacrifice (Salmon Poetry, 2010) is just published. Eigse Riada theatre company produced his first play, Jo Bangles, at the Mill Theatre, Dundrum in 2010. He has lived in Holland, Greece and Italy, and now resides in Greystones, Co Wicklow.

Elaine Feeney was born in Galway in 1979. She has been writing since her early teens. In 2006 she won the North Beach Nights Grand Slam and in 2008 won the Cuirt Festival’s Poetry Grand Slam. She is a keen page and performance writer. Elaine has performed at many venues including The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, The Electric Picnic, The Vilenica Festival and The Cúirt International Literature Festival. She was the chosen writer on a One Sheet collaboration in 2010 with an artist and a graphic designer and this work is currently on exhibit across Dublin. Her work has been translated into Slovene. Elaine lives in Athenry with her partner Ray, and sons, Jack and Finn. Her debut collection of poetry, Where’s Katie, is just published by Salmon Poetry.

This Months Guest Readers are Noel King, Tim Cunningham and Richard Halperin.

Richard W. Halperin is an Irish/U.S. poet who lives in Paris. Since 2005, he has been widely published in journals, mainly in Ireland, e.g., Revival, The Stony Thursday Book, The Shop, Cyphers, The Stinging Fly (Featured Poet, Summer 2009), Poetry Ireland Review, Ropes Galway. He will be reading from his debut collection Anniversary (Salmon Poetry Limited). [optional:] He gave his first reading in 2007 at Glenstal Abbey.

Noel King is a writer, actor and musician, native of Tralee, Co. Kerry. His poetry, haiku, short stories, articles and reviews have appeared in publications in over thirty countries, the poetry in journals as diverse as Poetry Ireland Review, The Sunday Tribune, Bongos of the World (Japan), The Dalhousie University Review (Canada), Kotaz (South Africa), Poetry Salzburg Review (Austria) and Quadrant (Australia). Along the way he has been a singer with the famous Bunratty Castle Entertainers and has worked as an arts administrator and poetry editor. His first collection Prophesying The Past (Salmon Poetry) has just been published.

Tim Cunningham was born in Limerick in 1942. Tim has three collections published: Don Marcelino's Daughter (Peterloo Poets, 2001), Unequal Thirds (Peterloo Poets, 2006) and Kyrie (Revival Press, 2008).

This Months Guest Readers Knute Skinner and John Walsh.

Knute Skinner was born in St. Louis, Missouri. In 2000 he retired from teaching and now, along with his spouse, Edna Faye Kiel, is resident year round in Killaspuglonane, County Clare.
His first book of poetry, Stranger with a Watch, appeared in 1965 and contained early poems written in Iowa. His second collection, A Close Sky over Killaspuglonane (1968), showed the influence of the people and the landscape of rural Clare. Since then, he has published eight more books and six chapbooks. His poems, which have appeared widely in serial publications in Ireland, England, Australia and North America, show a variety of styles, including both free and formal verse. Two collections, The Bears and What Trudy Knows, demonstrate a marked departure from his usual lyric mode, as the poems are all fictional narratives highlighting brief moments in the lives of the imagined narrators. In 2007 Salmon Publishing brought out a collected edition, Fifty Years: Poems 1957-2007. He occasionally conducts poetry writing workshops. The Limerick launch of his memoir Help Me To A Getaway (Salmon) will be launched on the night by local poet Mark Whelan.

John Walsh was born in Derry in 1950. After sixteen years teaching English in Germany, in 1989 he returned to live in Connemara. His first collection of poetry 'Johnny tell Them' was published by Guildhall Press (Derry) in October 2006.

In 2007 he received a Publication Award from Galway County Council to publish his second collection,'Love's Enterprise Zone' (Doire Press, Connemara).

His poems have been published in Ireland, the UK and Austria and he has read and performed his poems at events in Ireland, the UK, Germany and Sweden.

He is organizer and MC of the successful performance poetry event North Beach Poetry Nights in the Crane Bar, Galway, Ireland's leading monthly performance poetry event. In March this year John won the Spring Festival Poetry Slam at the Munster Literary Festival in Cork. He has also been known to show up with his guitar and deliver one or two of his own songs.

Chopping Wood with T.S. Eliot, a third collection of sixty new poems was published by Salmon Poetry in May 2010.

The Locke Bar: New Cultural Hub For Limerick!

Celebrating 21 years at the heart of Limerick city this year, The Locke Bar recently marked the occasion by announcing details of its new venue, The Loft, which will play host to theatre, music, literature, comedy, and be available for parties and corporate functions. The Limerick Writers' Centre are already in residence there since last year with their 'On The Nail' literary reading series and now Limerick’s Bottom Dog Theatre Company have taken up residency in the new venue, which is ‘themed’ with memorabilia from Limerick’s theatrical and musical past. Richard Costello proprietor of the Locke Bar has managed, even in these recessionary times, to create a new cultural hub for the city. Also in residency are Limerick Songwriters who have a weekly open-mic session for new and aspiring songwriters. The Locke Bar is now undoubtedly the new home of poetry, literature, theatre and creative and artistic endeavours in Limerick.

The next monthly 'On The Nail' literary reading takes place Thursday 6th May 2010 at 8.00pm in The Locke Bar, George's Quay, Limerick.

Organised by The Limerick Writers' Centre this popular monthly reading and open-mic continues to attract audiences with a mix of poetry, prose and music.

This Months Guest Readers Kevin Higgins, Mary Madec and Susan Millar DuMars.

Kevin Higgins is co-organiser of Over The Edge literary events in Galway, Ireland. He has published three collections of poems The Boy With No Face (2005), Time Gentlemen, Please (2008) and Frightening New Furniture (2010) all published by Salmon Poetry. His work also features in Identity Parade – New British and Irish Poets (Ed Roddy Lumsden, Bloodaxe 2010).

Mary Madec was born in County Mayo. She started writing poetry about six years ago and since then has published in Crannóg, West 47, The Cúirt Annual, the SHOp, The Sunday Tribune, WOW and Iota among others. In Spring 2007 she was chosen for the Poetry Ireland Introductions; she was runner-up in the Raftery competition and published in the WINDOWS anthology. She also organises a community-writing project Away with Words for people with intellectual disabilities. Mary won the 2008 Hennessy Literary Award for Emerging Poetry. She is a participant in Kevin Higgins’s advanced poetry workshop at Galway Arts Centre and read at the 2008 Cúirt Festival Over The Edge Showcase reading. Mary’s first collection of poems, In Other Words, is just published by Salmon Poetry.

Susan Millar DuMars was born in Philadelphia in 1966 to a Belfast-born mother. She holds an MA in Writing from the University of San Francisco. Her poems and short stories have been published widely in the US, UK and Ireland. Susan's stories have been short-listed for many awards, and in 2005 she received an Irish Arts Council Bursary for her fiction. American Girls, a volume of her short stories, was published by Lapwing in 2007. Susan lives in Galway, Ireland. Since 2003, Susan and her husband Kevin Higgins have organised the successful Over the Edge reading series, showcasing new writers. Susan teaches creative writing at Galway Technical Institute, Galway Arts Centre, Galway Mayo Institute of Technology and on the Brothers of Charity Away With Words programme. Big Pink Umbrella (Salmon Poetry, 2008) is the first full collection of her poetry. One of her poems has been chosen by editor, Mathew Sweeney, for inclusion in Best of Irish Poetry 2010 (Southword Editions). Several of her poems will feature in Landing Places: Immigrant Poets in Ireland, edited by Eva Bourke (Dedalus Press, March 2010). Her second collection of poems, Dreams for Breakfast, is just published by Salmon Poetry.

This months reading will be preceeded by the launch of Revival poetry Journal 15.

This Months Guest Readers Terry McDonagh, Jean Ormerod and Helena Close .

Terry McDonagh is a poet and dramatist and has published five collections of poetry; a play; a book of letters and a novel and poetry for children. The Truth in Mustard (Arlen House) is his latest collection.

Jane Ormerod was born on the south coast of England and now lives in New York City. She is the author of Recreational Vehicles on Fire (Three Rooms Press, 2009), 11 Films (Modern Metrics, 2008), the spoken word CD Nashville Invades Manhattan, and is a founding editor at Uphook Press. She performs throughout the United States, from east to west coasts and everywhere in between.

Helena Close, has published four novels under the pseudonym Sarah O’Brien with co-writer, Trisha Rainsford. She has also written threenovels under her own name. Helena is currently co-writing a comedy drama TV series with Trisha Rainsford, and her next novel, The Clever One, will be published in March 2010 by Hachette.

This Months Guest Readers Bob Burke and Brendan Murphy .

Bob Burke is originally from Ennis. He now lives with his wife and three sons in a small village with no pub just outside Limerick. Bob has dabbled in writing since he was very young but recently not only managed to finish something he’d started but actually succeeded in getting it published. The Third Pig Detective Agency (published by The Friday Project – an imprint of Harper Collins) is his first novel and follows the adventures of Harry Pigg, porcine sleuth and his attempts to track down a missing lamp for local businessman, Aladdin. The sequel, in which Harry must try to track down a large bearded gentleman dressed in red with a penchant for saying ‘ho ho ho’ a lot, will be published in November 2010 and the third book in the series is scheduled for summer 2011.
When not writing and being an unpaid chauffeur for his three sons, Bob enjoys reading lots and lots of books and supporting Munster in rugby and Chelsea in football. Although a keen gamer (both board and computer), being comprehensively beaten by his seven year old son in Mario Kart recently has convinced him that his gaming talents may lie elsewhere.

Brendan Murphy, Cuirt Slam Champion 2005, All Ireland Slam Champion 2007, Over the Edge Flash Fiction Champion and North Beach Slam Champion 2009.

Kate Dempsey has had poems placed and published in various publications in Ireland and in UK and in competitions including The Hennessy New Irish Writing in the Sunday Tribune, Poetry Ireland, The Shop, Revival, Orbis, Abridged and Grist. She was also selected to read for Poetry Ireland Introductions and Windows Publications Introductions as well as at Electric Picnic, CastlePalooza and Flat Lake Festivals. She runs the Poetry Divas Collective who are available to read at all cool festivals.
Fergus Costelloe is a performance poet from Tipperary. He was the winner of the Cuisle International Poetry Festival Grand Slam held at The Locke Bar, Limerick in October last year. He is also an artist and his work has been displayed widely.

The Limerick Writers’ Centre continue their ‘On The Nail’ reading series with a special evening devoted to the art of reading,writing and publishing poetry at The Locke Bar, George’s Quay, Limerick on Thursday 5th Nov 2009 at 8.30pm plus music on the night will be provided by Chris Wood and friends.

Based on the best selling Salmon Poetry book: Poetry: Reading It, Writing It, Publishing It! is an unusual take on poetry and the marketplace. It contains advice in the form of essays by poets and publishers (and poets who are also publishers) such as Rita Ann Higgins, Gabriel Fitzmaurice, Kevin Higgins and Caroline Lynch. As well as a frank take on publishing, there are essays from poets who mentor poetry writing workshops, poets who teach poetry at universities, poets who host reading series, run poetry organizations, and publish e-journals. In other words, poets who lives are absorbed in the practice of poetry. The book is intended to give a true perspective on contemporary poetry for those who aspire to the art, and those who would like to understand what it means to be a poet. The focus is international: The contributors are Irish, British, American, Canadian, African and Australian.

Featured Readers.

Liam O’Brien and Myles Breen are well known in the theatre world being founder members, along with Mike Finn and Mike Burke, of Limerick’s newest theatre company, Bottom Dog. Recently Liam and Myles read poems from Desmond O’Grady new book, My Limerick Town, at the Belltable. Tonight they will read a selection of their favourite classic poems.

CIARAN O'DRISCOLL was born in Callan, Co Kilkenny, in 1943, and presently lives in Limerick. He is a committee member of Cuisle, Limerick City's International Poetry Festival, and a member of Aosdána. He has published eight books of poetry including Moving On, Still There: New and Selected Poems (Dedalus Press, 2001), and Surreal Man (Pighog, 1996). In 2001, Liverpool University Press published his childhood memoir, A Runner Among Falling Leaves. A new collection is forthcoming in October 2009 from Three Spires (Cork), and ‘Swirl’, a CD which features him reading a number of poems, with musical accompaniment, was released in July.
Patrick Stack was born in Limerick, brought up in Kerry and now lives in Clare. A graduate of TCD he has recently began writing again after a long break. Currently working on a new collection.

Tom McCarthy is the winner of the inaugural Desmond O’Grady Trophy at the Desmond O’Grady International Poetry Festival. He is a native of Ballynanty but now lives in Ardnacrusha. He reads regularly at the White House Poetry Revival and has one Chapbook published.
